Overview
North America harbors the highest diversity of freshwater mussels in the world, yet 30 species have become extinct and >65% are considered imperiled. The Brook Floater has been identified by Northeastern states as one of the most critically imperiled species of greatest conservation. In 2019 a decision not to list the species under the federal Endangered Species act was due, in part, to the coordinated research and conservation efforts conducted by the Brook Floater Working Group (BFWG).
Our Funding
Funding for all projects is primarily supported by the Competitive State Wildlife Grant, awarded in 2015 and 2022. The lead state is Massachusetts with the addition of multiple states under this grant, other leveraged funds, and other working group participants.
